Santa Monica commuters prepare -- the I-405 Sepulveda Pass Improvements Project contractor will conduct two full 10-hour northbound I-405 freeway closures from the Santa Monica Boulevard off-ramp to the Santa Monica Boulevard on-ramp in West Los Angeles tonight, May 17, and Saturday, May 18 from 11 pm to 9 am each day.

Ramps along the 10-mile closure area of the 405 Freeway between the 10 and 101 freeways will begin to be shut down for "Carmageddon II" as early as 7 p.m. tonight and closure of individual freeway lanes will begin at 10 p.m. to ensure full freeway closure by midnight.

The City of Santa Monica Emergency Operations Center has been activated for the 405 closure this weekend to ensure uninterrupted support of city staff and constant communication throughout the region to handle any situation resulting from the event.

Three weeks ahead of schedule, the 405 Freeway westbound Wilshire Boulevard on-ramp and the northbound off-ramp will re-open to traffic today. The two ramp closures, popularly known as “Ramp Jam,” were originally scheduled for 90-day closures that officially began on June 22 with reopening originally scheduled for Sept. 22.

Starting this weekend, 64 Changeable Message Signs (CMS) located on most Los Angeles County freeways will begin displaying information about the upcoming closure of the San Diego Freeway (I-405).

Part two of "Carmageddon" is scheduled for September 29-30, which will see a 10-mile closure of both directions of the 405 Freeway. During the closure, contractors will demolish the remaining side of the Mulholland Bridge.

Plan ahead, adjust your travel times, and share the ride -- that's the message from the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority. The 405 Freeway Wilshire ramp closures started at 10 p.m. Friday night. Construction of the westbound and northbound on and off-ramps from Wilshire is expected to take 90 days.
