Locals and tourists gathered to watch and take part in a free event Thursday at Santa Monica's Third Street Promenade where they were able to encounter some of the lavish artistic feats of Cirque du Soleil's "Totem."

Thursday's event took place on the

Promenade between Broadway and Santa Monica Boulevard at 12:30 pm.

Local Red Bull-affiliated BMX athletes and break dancers joined

the "Totem" performers for the special celebration bringing back Cirque du

Soleil where it originated from nearly 30 years ago: the street.

This event was free to the public and allowed the a close up look at

some of the artistic feats of "Totem" that are on show at the Big Top Tent next to the Santa Monica Pier through March 16, 2014.
