The City of Santa Monica will accept permit applications Dec. 2 through Dec. 16 for anyone seeking to conduct fitness or athletic instruction, classes, or camps for compensation -- financial or in exchange for goods or services -- in Santa Monica's public parks or at the beach.
A permit will be required starting Jan. 1, 2014.
Permits will be issued by size of group and location with specified days, times, and rules. Additional restrictions apply for Palisades Park.
A maximum of 20 medium and/or large group permits will be issued for Palisades Park. Medium groups may have no more than 10 participants excluding instructors and spectators, and large groups may have no more than 15 participants excluding instructors and spectators.
Applications for Palisades Park medium and large groups will be accepted Dec. 2 until Dec. 16 at 5:30 pm only.
If more than 20 qualified applications are received during the application period, then a lottery will be used to fairly allocate permits.
Permits will be valid in designated zones Monday – Saturday from 6 am to 9 pm. Commercial fitness or athletic instruction classes or camps of any size will not be permitted on Sundays or North of Marguerita Avenue.
Commercial fitness or athletic instruction, classes or camps will be prohibited in Ashland Park, Beach Park #4, Chess Park, Euclid Park, Goose Egg Park, Joslyn Park, Ken Genser Square, Muscle Beach Park, Ozone Park, Pacific Street Park, Park Drive Park, and Schader Park.
