The Cross Country team at Santa Monica High School participated in the Mt. San Antonio College Cross Country Invitational three mile races with the Boys Varsity winning their heat and the Girls Varsity placing second Saturday afternoon, Oct. 20.
Santa Monica High School Cross Country Head Coach Tanya Fischer was proud of the way the Vikings performed at the Mt. SAC Cross Country Invitational.
"It's a great achievement," said Fischer. "Our varsity boys got first place team at the Mt. Sac Invitational and our varsity girls got second place team."
The Boys Varsity Cross Country team placed first with a score of 57 points in three mile Race 116 with a team time of 1:22:20, an average runner time at 16:28, an average mile at 5:29, and a five man gap time of 1:04.
The Girls Varsity Cross Country team placed second with a score of 58 points in three mile Race 121 with a team time of 1:40:56, an average runner time at 20:11, an average mile at 6:44, and a five man gap of 1:51.
Even though the girls team time, average runner time, and average mile time was higher then winner Escondido whose team time was 1:40:58, two seconds slower then the Vikings, Escondido still won by two points 56 to 58 based upon the twenty second difference in the five man gap.
Next race for the Vikings Cross Country team is the Ocean League Final Meet #3 away Wednesday, Oct. 31 at 1:30 p.m.
