Winning a game is often the result of making as few minor errors as possible. When Pacifica Christian faced Crossroads at Grisanti Gym on Friday, it was the Sea Wolves who made the fewest mistakes where it mattered most - the short game.

Taking the volleyball court for the first official time this season, Pacifica Christian (1-0) defeated Crossroads (1-1) in three games, 25-16, 25-21, and 25-19.

Pacifica Christian coach Staci Lane said while she was pleased with the victory, the season was very young and the Lady Sea Wolves did have some room for improvement.

“We played well. We were aggressive,” she said. “Our focus today was working on coverage because that was one of the areas we needed to improve upon.”

While Crossroads defeated Gardena Serra, 3-2, just one day earlier, Roadrunners coach Catie Mintz said her girls needed just a little more time to work together.

“I think we did some really good things. We never really practiced with all the kids there. Some have never played in a varsity game,” she said, adding despite her team's ability to win a few long rallies, her team struggled at times with passing.

The third game was indicative of both coaches’ observation of her respective teams.

After Crossroads jumped to a 7-4 start in the third frame, Pacifica Christian took advantage of Crossroads' mistakes and went on a 12-1 service point run to take a 16-8 lead.

The Roadrunners came back and cut the lead to within three, but Pacifica Christian put the Roadrunners away with an ace and a kill to claim the frame and the match.

The Sea Wolves will play St. Monica at Memorial Park on Monday, while Crossroads will travel to Viewpoint on Tuesday.
