Santa Monica Police Chief Timothy Jackman clutches the raffle jar while KTTV journalist Jeff Michael announces the winner of a Panasonic Lumix S3 camera during the SMPD's block party on Tuesday, August, 2, 2011. The theme of this year's National Night Out is "emergency preparedness", which drew in educators from safety facilities such as the Santa Monica Fire Department, American Red Cross, and neighborhood coalitions.

The annual Police Activities League Night Out took place Tuesday night outside the Santa Monica police station.

The event featured hot dogs, carnival games and demonstrations on stage while also adhering to the theme of emergency preparation. Both the police and fire departments stressed the importance of self-sustainability in the case of a disaster.

Throughout the night, the public services told the community about Santa Monica'sCERT and DART classes to help better train people for disaster relief.
