Santa Monica College Announce November Concerts Line Up:

Santa Monica College has a long line-up of concerts planned for November, ranging from the Emeritus College Concert Band to blues to opera.

All concerts are held at The Broad Stage or Edye Second Space in the SMC Performing Arts Center, Santa Monica Boulevard at 11th Street, except the Nov. 10 Jazz Vocal Ensemble concert. Parking is free at the Performing Arts Center.

The concerts are:

• Friday, Nov. 2 at 7:30 p.m. in The Broad Stage: SMC Applied Music Program Benefit Concert. Under the direction of Yulia Krasny, the Applied Music Program is a distinctive program for SMC’s most gifted vocal, instrumental and composing students. These talented musicians will display their best at this fundraising concert. (Tickets are $10)

• Sunday, Nov. 4 at 3 p.m. in The Broad Stage: Emeritus College Concert Band. With Mike Corrigan conducting and Jessica Swift assistant conducting, the band will perform a program that includes Gershwin, Sousa, Richard Rodgers and more. (Free)

• Sunday, Nov. 4 at 4 p.m. in The Edye Second Space: Advanced Vocal Techniques Recital, under the direction of Janelle DeStefano. SMC’s advanced voice students will perform classical, jazz, musical theater and contemporary commercial songs. (Free. Complimentary tickets are available in the SMC Music Office, Room 211 in the Performing Arts Center.)

• Thursday, Nov. 8 at 11:15 a.m. in the Edye Second Space: “A Day in the Blues.” SMC music professor Terry Carter and The Tomcats will present an amazing afternoon of classic blues. The band puts its twist on blues standards written and performed by legends such as Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, Jimi Hendrix, The Allman Brothers, Stevie Ray Vaughan, BB King, Johnny Cash and more. (Free. Complimentary tickets are available in the SMC Music Office, Room 211 in the Performing Arts Center.)

• Friday, Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m. in The Broad Stage: Jazz: Richie Garcia. World-renowned percussionist Richie Garcia will lead a vibrant ensemble of Latin jazz masters and rising stars. (Tickets are $10)

• Saturday, Nov. 10 at 7:30 p.m. at Barnum Hall, Santa Monica High School, 601 Pico Blvd.: SMC Jazz Vocal Ensemble. Under the direction of Andreas Preponis, SMC’s award-winning jazz vocal ensemble – backed by L.A.-area jazz musicians – blends its voices in a program of repertoire specifically arranged for four-part harmony. (Tickets are $10)

• Sunday, Nov. 18 at 3 p.m. in The Broad Stage: SMC Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of James Martin. The concert features an American/British program of 20th century classics, highlighted by SMC resident composer David Goodman in two watery works – River’s Edge and Dolphin Dance – plus American composer Aaron Copland’s Quiet City, featuring orchestra members Catherine French on English horn and Terry Sakow on trumpet. Program includes Gustav Holst’s popular Planets plus the final large work by Edgar Elgar, his cello concerto, first movement, with student Benton Preciado as soloist. (Tickets are $10)

• Tuesday, Nov. 27 at 11:15 a.m. in the Edye Second Space: SMC Guitar Ensemble, with conductor Jimmy Cheesman. The ensemble will perform an exciting mixture of styles that includes jazz, classical and flamenco music arranged specifically for guitar, with improv, duets and ensemble sections. (Free. Complimentary tickets are available in the SMC Music Office, Room 211 in the Performing Arts Center.)

• Friday, Nov. 30 at 7 p.m. in The Broad Stage: SMC Opera Theatre: “The Chill of Winter.” Artistic Director Gail Gordon directs fully staged scenes from Puccini’s La Boheme, Massenet’s Werther, Barber’s Vanessa and more. (Tickets are $10)
