The City of Santa Monica will celebrate National Arbor Day on Friday, April 24, by planting 20 trees at Clover Park. Participating in the planting ceremonies will be the City’s Urban Forest Task Force and Recreation and Parks Commission along with the Kiwanis Club of Santa Monica, UCLA Circle K, and Santa Monica Lions Club.
This year’s Arbor Day celebrates the importance of trees by planting fifteen California native Coast Live Oak (Quercus agrifolia), honors a new species introduction by planting five Kauri Pine (Agathis robusta), and adds pleasant aromas to the planting palette with five Willow Peppermint (Eucalyptus nicholii).
The planting will take place near the southwest softball field closest to the airport at Clover Park.
Founded in 1872 by J. Sterling Morton, Arbor Day celebrates the benefits of trees.
This year marks the 143rd anniversary of Arbor Day and Santa Monica’s 34th year as a Tree City USA, an honor given by the Arbor Day Foundation for Santa Monica’s commitment to effective urban forest management.
Residents are invited, RSVP to trees@smgov.net.
