Not All Santa Monica Dog Owners Carry Dog Poop Bags: Letter To The Editor

Posted Dec. 18, 2012, 1:02 am

Letter To The Editor

Dear Editor,

Santa Monica has a municipal ordinance requiring dog owners to carry a visible bag in order to pick up their dog poop, but not all dog owners do so.

I am getting fed up with picking up dog poop in our front yard and also our back alley planter where we grow food which we eat.

Cannot we get some public support to require dog owners to pick up their dog poop?

Name Withheld

I totally agree with you. I love dogs but am so tired of rude dog owners. My trash can is always full of doggie poop bags and since I recycle most of my garbage I don't need to put it on the curb every week. But dog owners can't seem to take their waste to their OWN trash can so I am always getting MAGGOTS in my trash because of all the dog poop. Is there an ordinance to keep them out of my trash can???

Like the anti-smoking regulations, this one depends mainly on citizens policing each other through social pressure. Walking my own little guy, I always carry multiple baggies (although admittedly not always visible, being in my pocket) so I can pick up other dogs' poop I often see, sometimes multiple ones, once twenty on one walk! I do this partly because I'm basically an old Girl Scout by nature but also because I don't want dog owners to be hated as a group. Most of us are also disgusted by the unbelievable selfishness of these boors and hate that we take the heat for the few bad apples.

Perhaps it would be easier if Santa Monica hadn't banned plastic grocery bags and forced a 10 cent paper bag tax on people. I got plenty of re-use out of my grocery bags picking up after dogs. Too bad for me and for you.

There is a lot of dog owners that think they are to special to pick up dog poop! That gives us responsible dog owners a bad name! So pick up your poop ! You know who you are!

I feel the same way about cigarette butts. People just throw them on the ground or out of their windows while they are driving. If that's not polluting (and gross) what is. I'm tired of picking up cigarette butts from all around my front entry. To the people who do that and think it's ok....It isn't ok. It's disgusting, selfish and ignorant. My neighbor stands in front of my place (not his own place) smokes and then throws the butt on the side walk right in front of my place instead of his own place. 10 to 12 a day. Every morning I leave for work, I have to pick them up and toss them. That stinks as bad as the smoke itself!

Hi, a new app has been designed to incentivise dog owners to locate, tag and visit local waste cans that legally receive dog waste on a daily basis. You don't have to be a dog owner to use and locate the waste cans in your area. But the potential to receive cash vouchers for picking up and disposing of dog poop is worth a try? Have fun on doggydoodar.

Completely agree. The amount of un-removed dog feces in the neighborhoods just north and just south of Montana has become unbearable. People are always cleaning the stuff off their shoes.... it's everywhere. At the very minimum, the current rules must be enforced. Unlike the smoking rule, it is very difficult for us residents to enforce this because we often have no idea where the perpetrators live. In my opinion, dog owners should be forced to register their dogs feces with the city and if feces matching their dog is left un-removed, they sould be sent a ticket.
