Homecoming is always supposed to be a sweet thing for the home team. Well, at least it is supposed to be. The Santa Monica High football team got a chance to savor the sweet taste of a 42-6 over Inglewood Morningside in the team’s Ocean League opener on Friday night.

The win improves Santa Monica’s record to 3-3 overall, 1-0 in league play.

Santa Monica plays Beverly Hills High School this coming Friday. The blowout win by the Vikings is somewhat of a surprise, considering that both teams came into contest basically mirroring one another in points scored and total offensive yards gained per game.

The win also keeps Santa Monica on pace among the leaders in the Southern Section Division Western IV class. Currently, Santa Monica is ranked No.4 behind St. Francis (No.3), Chaminade (No.2) and Gardena Serra (No.1). Seeding is very important when it comes to the postseason.

The Vikings are in great shape for a playoff run should they manage to play well down the stretch of a rugged schedule. Playing Morningside, a school that is known more for its perennial basketball prowess, was thought to solidify that point.

But after the first quarter, Morningside put up no real fight against the Vikings. Santa Monica held a slight 7-6 lead heading into the second quarter. This is where the wheels came off of the truck for the Monarchs. Santa Monica scored 21 unanswered points in the second quarter to lead 28-6 heading into the locker room.

The Vikings then tacked on 14 more points in the third quarter to conclude the team’s scoring for the night.
