I have a huge crush on a coworker and we have been flirting for a while. I’m worried about dating someone in my office. What should I do? – Becky, 34
Thanks for your message! Well congrats on the flirtation, it can definitely be fun. But workplace romance is a tricky area because the pros and cons are so polarized.
First the cons. You have to be extremely careful of dating a coworker for many reasons.
First if you or he is a superior then there could be possible legal ramifications in the future. Some companies even have policies about no dating in the workplace written into their contract and it can lead to an immediate dismissal. Find out the legal facts and risks before you move forward.
People love to gossip so there is the issue with becoming fodder for all the bored people at work. At the very least a romance gone sour can lead to uncomfortable working situations and you might find yourself looking for another job.
The other side to this coin is the large number of married couples who met at work. Some studies say close to 40 percent! It makes sense that after college, the workplace is a prime place for getting to know people daily over long periods. This leads to close bonds that sometimes end up in love. I know dozens of couples that met at work. So there is a good chance of it working out.
There’s nothing wrong with an office flirtation if you are able to remain professional and still available to viable options in other areas of your life.
Only time will tell if it is more than a casual flirt or if it’s the real thing. There’s no hurry so enjoy the process.
