Posted May. 22, 2014, 6:05 pm
On Monday, May 26th, at 11:00 a.m., Santa Monica’s historic Woodlawn Cemetery, Mortuary & Mausoleum, located at 1847 14th Street, will host the City’s 76th annual observance of Memorial Day.
Presented by a consortium of local charitable and service-oriented organizations, this year’s event features the unveiling of a Commemorative Wall honoring Santa Monica veterans. Additional event highlights include a condor squadron military flyover, musical performances by the Santa Monica Oceanaires and the Patriot Brass Ensemble, food, and cemetery tours.
This year’s keynote speaker is Council member Bob Holbrook, who has served as Member and Mayor of the City Council for 24 years and as a Member and President of the Board of Education for eight years. A native of Santa Monica, he also served six years in the California Air National Guard.
After last year’s Memorial Day Observance, Holbrook proposed the installation of a Commemorative Wall. In describing the genesis of the project, he said "It would be nice to commemorate these people so that when Memorial Day services are held, people can remember those who were lost, husbands, sons and daughters of Santa Monica."
Limited street parking is available. Parking at Santa Monica College’s Lot 4 at the corner of 16th Street & Pico Boulevard is free. Santa Monica College’s Parking Lot 6 at 14th Street & Pico Boulevard is $5. There will be shuttle service from both lots and the Elks Lodge at 1040 Pico Boulevard to the Cemetery.
