Letter To The Editor: Stop Signs Needed Where Alleys Meet The Sidewalk

Posted Mar. 2, 2014, 8:08 am

Letter To The Editor

Dear Editor,

As a resident of Santa Monica for 17 years, I would like to bring your attention to a very important and ever-growing problem of a necessity of STOP signs where alleys meet the sidewalk.

I have noticed a significant rise in pedestrian/driver conflict over the past years.

Drivers don’t stop while are flying out of alleys. Pedestrians have the right of way so they typically don’t look or they run/ride right through on the sidewalk.

Personally, I have been hit twice by cars rushing out of the alleys and my 10 years old son was hit once as well.

I want to bring this to your attention that every alley or at the very least blind alleys should be equipped with a STOP sign and every alley should have at least a line to STOP. This will help significantly decrease this DANGEROUS situation.

Thank you,

Vladimir Derkach

Yes! WHy hasn't this been implemented a long time ago. My daughter was hit while on her bike when a truck turned onto the street not stopping to check the side walks for pedestrians.

I totally agree, each alley should have a line painted in white and the word "stop" where the alley meet the side walk. Lots of people are walking around going to the corner park at yahoo center or walking kids to McKinley school. Some people drive down the alley 40/50 miles/Hr. It is dangerous to even back out of parking car port. People use alleys as short cuts to beat the increasing traffic. I live near 26th and Broadway. Some people speed out of Mac Donald secondary parking lot and even dump their Mac Donald trash down the alley.

I agree that alleys function as little streets and so must be better regulated and be outfitted with stop signs. They also need limit lines to stop motorists before driving across sidewalks. This problem was mentioned by many neighbors while planning for the Michigan Avenue Neighborhood Greenway.

I agree and think this is a good idea. I have a 2 year and we generally walk everywhere. I must say, that I find walking a very frightening experience for the points raised here. There have been many times where we have had to jump out of a car's path. I also would like to suggest having more stop signs in Santa Monica overall. For example, I frequent Palisades Park with my daughter almost daily. There are very few cars that stop at the cross walks and it is very challenging to cross. When we do cross, there have been some nail biting experiences were we narrowly avoided being hit. When I read this post and some of the comments and see that people have been hit by cars, I am deeply concerned. How many more people have to be hurt for the city of Santa Monica to watch out for pedestrian safety instead of letting cars drive as fast as they want and hit anything they want?
