Visit Santa Monica Farmers Markets During Carmageddon II:

When Carmageddon II weekend arrives on Sept. 29/30, the Santa Monica Farmers Markets are encouraging residents to stay local and pick up some great fresh produce and some new recipes to try at home.

Always in season with the freshest foods, over the weekend, the Farmers’ Markets will be giving away tasty new recipes for seasonal produce.

“We are the largest grower-only Certified Farmers Market in Southern California and a favorite for local chefs,” said Farmers Market Supervisor Laura Avery. “So avoid the Sepulveda Pass and walk or bike to Santa Monica’s famous Farmers Markets.”

There will be three Farmers Markets over the I-405 closure weekend:

— The Saturday Pico Farmers’ Market is at Virginia Avenue between Pico and Cloverfield – open 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

— The Saturday Downtown Farmers’ Market is on Arizona Avenue between 4th and 2nd Streets – open 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

— The Sunday Main Street Farmers’ Market is on Main Street in Heritage Square – open 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Amelia Saltsman, author of the Santa Monica Farmers Market Cookbook, has provided the recipes being featured over the I-405 closure weekend.

They are available on-line or at the Farmers’ Market information tables. Here are the three easy and delicious recipes to keep you off the road.

1. Rustic Eggplant-tomato bake (late-season tomatoes and eggplants will be plentiful)

2. Tromboncino Trifolati (Tromboncino, as well as more common early varieties such as butternut squash will be readily available. Tromboncino are green in summer, orange in fall, and are very cool looking.)

3. Roasted autumn fruits

On September 29/30, the I-405 Sepulveda Pass Improvements Project continues as the north side of the Mulholland Bridge is demolished.
