The Santa Monica City Council campaigns of Richard McKinnon and Ted Winterer have received a boost after Santa Monicans for Responsible Growth (SMRG) announced its endorsement of the two current Santa Monica Planning Commissioners.

Ivan Perkins, Chair of SMRG, said the organization was established to support candidates who “will ensure that new development is truly in residents’ best interests, in terms of the livability and atmosphere of Santa Monica.”

“The members of SMRG believe that Richard McKinnon and Ted Winterer are the candidates who most closely share our concerns about the ways that major new developments can negatively impact traffic, parking, aesthetics, the character of neighborhoods, and the economic vibrancy of the City,” Perkins said.

The endorsement committee evaluated candidates based on their answers to a questionnaire and/or interviews with them about development, their vision for the City, and their priorities in office.

The five candidates who neither filled out the questionnaire nor interviewed with SMRG were evaluated based on what committee members knew of them through the media and public forums.

Carla Finnerman, a member of SMRG, said McKinnon and Winterer were most closely aligned with SMRG’s values of livability and sustainability.

“We were impressed by Ted Winterer’s and Richard McKinnon’s depth of experience, leadership, and their commitment to the livability of Santa Monica’s neighborhoods,” Finnerman said. “We are looking forward to helping ensure that they become the next new members of the Santa Monica City Council.”

Responsible growth for our great city is LONG overdue as many of us sat by and allowed Bloom, his council cronies and their groslly overpaid consultants to over build, over populate and waste valuable city resources while diminishing the quality of life for all Santa Monicans. Traffic is absurd and how many more condos and shopping centers do we need. Bloom is more concerned about his political career than the constituents he is supposed to serve. I would love much more transparency in our city government and determine how much money and gifts from contractors and consultants ended up in the campaign and personal bank accounts- just curious

I agree with what Michael said. Now these same contractors and developers who pad the councilors pockets are trying to close the airport so they can build more condos and shopping centers, causing more traffic and pollution for our neighborhoods. Their using 'astro turf' groups to manipulate the public opinion in their thinly veiled attempt at another land grab.

The last thing we need is those two jokers Ted Winterer and Richard McKinnon. They're as corrupt with the developers as any. They've been pushing to close the airport so they can turn that into hi rise condos and shopping malls. If you want more traffic congestion and higher rents in Santa Monica then vote for these turkeys.

These candidates are receiving endorsement by groups outside of Santa Monica who do not live here. They want to control what goes on in our city but are not part of the community. I will vote against Richard McKinnon and Ted Winterer because I believe they are more interested in the perks of the job than actually doing what's right for us.
