The Santa Monica Police Department's Traffic Enforcement Section will focus on motorists who speed and fail to stop for posted stop signs during the next three months.

SMPD Lt. Jay Trisler said unsafe speed is one of the leading causes of traffic collisions in the City of Santa Monica.

Also, Trisler said the driver of any vehicle, including bicycles approaching a stop sign, must come to a complete stop with wheels ceasing forward movement.

The crack down will be during the months of July, August, and September.

* 22350 CVC - Basic Speed Law: No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic on, and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of persons or property.

* 22450(a) CVC - The driver of any vehicle approaching a stop sign at the entrance to, or within, an intersection shall stop at the limit line, if marked, otherwise before entering the crosswalk on the near side of the intersection.

It's about time. I hope they pay extra attention to intersections with crosswalks. I've had too many close calls.

What can be done about aggressive drivers? You know, the ones who accelerate needlessly just to go from one stop sign to another or honk because they have to wait for 2.3 seconds. These people must have been bullys in school.

I hope they take a close look at the streets heavily traveled by bicycle riders with the "sharrow" lanes. The bikes don't stop at the stop signs and neither do most Prius drivers, it's slow and go. I've had too many close calls to count. I only wish we could balance the city budget with these fees, too bad they go to the state.

I agree with all the posts--very dangerous for any pedestrian in town which is why I walk very early in the morning. Bikes don't stop, drivers act irritated if pedestrians have to cross the street. Too many mean people in this town--I speak from experience because I'm a native and it never used to be like this.

"...motorists who speed and fail to stop for posted stop signs..." In other words, people who drive BMWs.

I second the comment about Bikes not stopping at stop signs usually. I can count on one hand the numbers of times I have seen bikes stop. I am all for sharing the road, but they too should follow the laws of the road, which sadly isn't all that often. I am also a biker and drive a BMW, so it is zero to do with the car type as some think.

Please focus on East SM.! Also, numerous violators on southbound Centinela at Virginia Ave. during peak traffic times who block the intersection. I don't think I've ever seen someone ticketed for this infraction even though it is clearly posted.

Now, now let's all remember our places here. BMWs and Mercedes are high tax payers and deserve to get by with being douches on the road. The police are really after people who drive normal cars but can still afford a ticket. They'll shake you down for your last nickel. That's how things really work with SMPD.
