Santa Monica police arrested a 37-year-old man on Thursday, Jan. 24 for letting himself into a home in the 2300 block of Second Street.

At 1:40 a.m. officers of the Santa Monica Police Department responded to the residence after the occupants had reported a prowler entering their home.

When the officers arrived they spoke with the victim and a witness and they learned that the victim had been sleeping inside the residence when they were awakened by the sound of the front door being opened.

At first the victim had thought that it was her nephew (who had been sleeping in another room in the residence), so she called out the nephew’s name.

The voice that responded was not that of her nephew but a strange male voice that she did not recognize. At that time the nephew awoke, and they both got out of their beds.

They then saw a man standing in the entryway, just inside the door.

The victim and her nephew both pushed this man back out the door at which time the man ran away.

The officers conducted an area check and detained a man who fit the description of the suspect in the 2400 block of Main Street.

The suspect was identified shortly afterwards and was arrested.

This man, who refused to state his place of residence, was charged with trespass, and loitering on private property.

Bail was set at $5,000.
