Santa Monica police arrested a 28-year-old Los Gatos resident on Friday, Dec. 20 for assaulting a Traffic Services Officer (TSO) on Main Street who was issuing him a parking ticket.

Officers of the Santa Monica Police Department were called out to the 2700 block of Main Street in order to assist the TSO at 6:12 pm on this day who reported that an irate driver had assaulted him.

Upon arrival the officers spoke with the TSO who told them that he had been in the process of issuing a parking violation ticket when the owner of the vehicle in question arrived and attempted to confront him as he was performing his duty.

The TSO, as an attempt to avoid confrontation, ignored the driver of the vehicle, at which point the driver of the vehicle grabbed the electronic ticket-issuing device and said, “excuse me!”

The TSO advised the driver of the vehicle to let go of the machine twice, but the driver of the vehicle did not comply and a physical altercation ensued.

It was then that the TSO radioed the police for assistance.

The officers then arrested this man and he was charged with assault. Bail was set in the sum of $20,000.

Editor’s Note: These reports are part of a regular police coverage series entitled “Alert Police Blotter” (APB), which injects some minor editorial into certain police activities in Santa Monica. Not all of The Mirror’s coverage of incidents involving police are portrayed in this manner. More serious crimes and police-related activities are regularly reported without editorial in the pages of the Santa Monica Mirror and its website,

The confrontation was started by the public servant, the TSO, who refused to talk to the person. While the car owner was wrong in grabbing the unit, he only escalated the incident. The TSO should immediately be terminated. I am third-generation here in Santa Monica and cannot believe what employees who take money from the citizens of Santa Monica do in the performance of their jobs. The TSO should be made to immediately apologize to the car owner.

We should pitty the poor saps that have to write parking tickets. Imagine the embarrassment of having to admit to people what your job is or the humiliation your kids feel on career days. I mean the trash man gets more respect. Yeah, some of these meter maids seem full of themselves but just remember their jobs suck and probably don't pay a very good wage. They have to live with that pathetic career choice.

The trash man gets more respect because he is performing a real service. I once put coin in a broken meter and while I was walking away, a meter maid pulled next to my car and started to issue a ticket. I went back running and his answer was that he didn't have an instrument to test. I pulled another coin and inserted it to show him. As he placed the ticket on my windshield with a smirk told me to take the matter up with the city. What a Karma to make people unhappy as a job.

Wow! Can't believe how a person can get un-corked about a ticket. Park within the time limits and correct places and like abracadabra ! No ticket ! Or manage your time better or park in a pay lot. No upping the blood pressure, loosing your cool or getting busted , booked, cavity searched and paying a stiff fine and getting your mug photo. And please, have some respect for others and their occupations - honest work is honest work. You fellows seem to have a penchant for belittling others; perhaps because of your lack of self esteem?

Meter Maids are parasites who should be shunned by society at large for volunteering to do this hideous job. But the real culprits are the rat-bastard politicians who enacted the usurous and blood sucking laws that are gradually making the once great Santa Monica an unlivable city.
