A 64-year-old Los Angeles man was arrested in Santa Monica on Friday, Dec. 20 after randomly punching a woman in the chest on a sidewalk, causing her to fall to the ground.

Officers of the Santa Monica Police Department responded to the area of 10th Street and Wilshire Boulevard at 10 am on this day after hearing about a fight that had happened.

When they arrived the officers spoke with the victim who told them that she had been walking westbound on Wilshire Boulevard when she saw a man walking in the opposite direction.

The woman stated that it appeared that their trajectories had placed them on course for a collision so she had decided to alter her direction by a few degrees.

When they were in arm’s length of each other the man suddenly punched her in the chest, causing her to fall down to the ground.

The victim told the officers that she was desirous of a private person’s arrest so the officers obliged and arrested the man, who was still in the vicinity.

This L.A. man was charged with assault. Bail was set at $20,000.

Editor’s Note: These reports are part of a regular police coverage series entitled “Alert Police Blotter” (APB), which injects some minor editorial into certain police activities in Santa Monica. Not all of The Mirror’s coverage of incidents involving police are portrayed in this manner. More serious crimes and police-related activities are regularly reported without editorial in the pages of the Santa Monica Mirror and its website, smmirror.com.

Anyone want to bet it was another homeless kook that this city loves to coddle?

Last year I had a homeless guy stalk myself and my child from Arizona and 23rd to Santa Monica and 20th before he finally got close enough to start spitting at us. I had already called SMPD but they had not arrived so I turned and told the guy to back off and he charged us. I restrained him until SMPD showed up and they told me they had already chased him away from the elementary school and also Vons for harassing people and public intoxication but had only told him to "move along".
