A ruptured gas line has forced the closure of Santa Monica Boulevard in both directions between Second Fourth Street in Santa Monica.
Construction crews with jackhammers punctured the gas line near Santa Monica Boulevard and Second Street.
SMPD Sgt. Richard Lewis said the leak was reported just after 1 p.m.
"A gas main was severed just south of 210 Santa Monica Boulevard," Lewis said. "They evacuated the area and Southern California Gas came out and capped the line just after 2 p.m. It's safe there now."
Lewis said the section of Santa Monica Boulevard was still closed as officers were investigating the incident.
About 75 office workers at 1423 Second Street were evacuated as a precaution.
