The City of Santa Monica’s Office of Emergency Management has completed a Kids’ Emergency Preparedness Activity Guide, which is a free and fun way for kids and families to get prepared for emergencies.

Included in the Activity Guide are tips on emergency preparedness for kids and families, fun games and activities for children, and a step-by-step guide to create a family emergency plan.

The intent of this guide is to assist families in preparing for emergencies by encouraging everyone to:

1. Have an emergency kit

2. Make a family emergency plan

3. Be informed about disasters

This eight page Activity Guide is available at all Santa Monica Public Library branches (in the children’s sections).

The guide can also be downloaded from the Office of Emergency Management’s website at

Great job! The children's version on the FEMA site is so, so old-fashioned! What's your plan for finding out how many families actually go ahead and USE the book?

Children are the most vulnerable when disasters strike. They tend to panic and go to a corner to hide. This activity will help children have an idea on what to do during times of emergency. The activity will help them stay focused.
