Santa Monica Man, 27, Arrested For Violently Beating Girlfriend's Pug/Beagle

Alert Police Blotter: Coward, Bully Or Both?

Posted Mar. 19, 2013, 9:01 am

Tim Broughton / Mirror Contributor

A 27-year-old Santa Monica resident was arrested Thursday, March 7 after violently beating his girlfriend’s four-year-old pug/beagle.

At 5:11 pm officers of the Santa Monica Police Department went to the 1300 block of 11th Street after they had learned of a possible domestic violence incident that had just occurred.

When the officers arrived they spoke with a woman who was crying hysterically.

The officers were able to gather from the woman that her live-in boyfriend had violently beaten her pet dog and had informed her that he intended to kill the animal.

The officers detained the live-in boyfriend.

The officers then learned that a neighbor had already taken the badly injured four-year-old pug/beagle mix to a local emergency pet hospital for medical attention.

The officers entered the apartment in question and saw that there was a large amount of blood, urine, and feces around the living room where the abuse had taken place.

The officers investigated further and discovered that this was not the first time that the live-in boyfriend had violently abused the dog.

Apparently, on this date, the live-in boyfriend had called his girlfriend and informed her that he was about to take the animal’s life because the creature had bitten him.

The girlfriend had then rushed home and when she arrived there she witnessed the live-in boyfriend throw the poor animal against a wall and then kick the dog as she sought safety under a table.

The girlfriend had then grabbed her pet and ran outside seeking help, and as she was doing this, the live-in boyfriend had continued to punch the dog several times.

The officers took this Santa Monica man into custody, and he was charged with cruelty to animals.

Bail was set at $80,000.

The dog suffered internal injuries that required several days’ stay in the animal hospital, but thankfully is expected to recover.

Editor’s Note: These reports are part of a regular police coverage series entitled “Alert Police Blotter” (APB), which injects some minor editorial into certain police activities in Santa Monica. Not all of the Mirror’s coverage of incidents involving police are portrayed in this manner. More serious crimes and police-related activities are regularly reported without editorial in the pages of the Santa Monica Mirror and its website, smmirror.com.

If she allowed him to return after knowing he abuses her dog (the first time), she doesnt deserve to keep the dog. She should also be aware she is likely the next target and shoudl she be stupid enough to have children wtih this db, they will be the intended targets of his rage. Do the pup a favor and surrender him to a shelter so he can get a good home. I wish someone would post the offender's name.

I hope he goes to prison and gets the same treatment from the inmates, except that the inmates finish the job.

His name is Benhamin Joseph Tessler, I made it a point to find this son of a bitch's name. He is a Sales Director at Lineage Interactive(http://www.lineageinteractive.com) . You can leave comments on their facebook website, please everyone leave a personal message to Mr Tessler on their page. I will find out who the judge is on this case and everyone should write to the judge also, Although we can't beat him,, as badly as he beat that dog, if everyone does this we can make his life as miserable as he made that poor dog's life.

I feel bad for the girlfriend to a point. She knows he is an abuser from past incidents. She should be held accountable also. If for nothing else for neglect of her dog. This pattern will continue if the girlfriend continues to allow the boyfriend to stay with her. He won't change. The dog is the innocent victim here and thank God for the person who took him to the vet. I do not believe the girlfriend should be allowed to have the dog. Or any animal until she herself has treatment and grows up. Abuse starts with the animal, then progresses to humans and children. That is a fact. God bless this poor little pug and may they find him a good caring, loving home.

this is terrible...i have a pug, and he is the sweetest dog. it's just their nature. i don't believe the dog bit the guy, it's not a pug's nature. i hope he gets treated the same way, and his g/f needs some also for allowing it to happen multiple times. glad the little puggie is going to be ok. it's so sad, because pets just want our love.

I'd like to take the pug away from the girlfriend. in fact, i'm serious about adopting that pug. any information as to how I can take the dog away from her would be greatly appreciated. She knew and she continued to let that piece of shit stay around the precious pug. SHE should also looked at in regards to her inability to be fit to care for the pug.
