Santa Monica Cops To Target Motorists Who Fail To Obey Stop Signs

Posted May. 31, 2012, 2:09 am

Mirror Staff

For the month of June, Santa Monica Police Department motor officers will target violators who fail to stop for posted stop signs.

Each month the Department's Traffic Enforcement Section focuses on different driving behaviors that are primary causation factors for traffic collisions.

The California Vehicle Code - Section 22450 Laws Applicable to Stop Requirements:

22450. (a) The driver of any vehicle approaching a stop sign at the entrance to, or within, an intersection shall stop at a limit line, if marked, otherwise before entering the crosswalk on the near side of the intersection.

If there is no limit line or crosswalk, the driver shall stop at the entrance to the intersecting roadway.

(b) The driver of a vehicle approaching a stop sign at a railroad grade crossing shall stop at a limit line, if marked, otherwise before crossing the first track or entrance to the railroad grade crossing.

(c) Notwithstanding any other provision of law, a local authority may adopt rules and regulations by ordinance or resolution providing for the placement of a stop sign at any location on a highway under its jurisdiction where the stop sign would enhance traffic safety.

Santa Monica Police Sergeant Phillbo Rubish wants to remind everyone that "stop signs mean just that, stop!"

"When you approach a stop sign you are required to come to a complete stop," Rubish said. "Slowly rolling through a stop sign -- sometimes called a California Stop -- while yielding to traffic is still a violation for which you can be cited."

"Each month the Department's Traffic Enforcement Section focuses on different driving behaviors that are primary causation factors for traffic collisions" I wonder when they are going to start enforcing turn-signal laws. Not using turn signals is way more dangerous than slow rolling a stop sign!

Thank God SMPD is going to start cracking down...they should continue this year round. Im an LA Sheriff's Deputy and live in Santa Monica. On my 1.5 mile drive to/from work I ALWAYS see at least 3-6 instances where cars are not stopping at stop signs but just rolling through them. Not to mention not stopping for pedestrians. In my experience and opinion, SM is one of the worst cities to drive in with the most inconsiderate drivers.

I am 8 months pregnant and pushing my 2 year old in a stroller and people still do not come to a complete stop. It is amazing. They should also get rid of right on red. Everyone rolls on through that one too.

I think it's a great idea.....but, what about the bicyclists that blow right through the signs all the time?

I can't believe how dangerous the little neighborhood intersection is near where I live. Drives don't understand how a 4-way stop really works and who gets to go first and so on. They just rush right into it, IF they stop at all. Most don't. I agree with Gail, too. Half the danger is from pedestrians who step right off the sidewalk without looking and cyclists who blow right through the intersection. Cyclists have to obey all the same rules of the road as motorists but they never do. Most pedestrians and cyclists are hit because of carelessness on both their side and the motorists. I learned to respect traffic as a kid. What happened to STOP, LOOK

This should include the bicyclists too!!! They are setting a poor example for young bicyclists.

Well they can start with 4th and Pier. Not very many drivers stop at that stop sign. After work, one can barely turn into a driveway because the non stopping. Then the offending driver has the nerve to ignore you or get mad. lol
