Santa Monica College Completes $600,000 400-Space Bike Parking Lot

Brenton Garen / Editor-in-Chief

Santa Monica College has built a new $600,000 bike parking lot with 400 spaces, bringing the campus total to 710 spaces.
The project was in response to a significant increase in bicycle ridership by SMC students and employees
A grand opening ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 28.
The facility, on three-quarters of an acre, is notably secure, with bright lighting, security cameras and emergency phones – and it is located across the street from the Campus Police office.
The lot also has secure racks for skateboards.
Funded by Measure AA, the 2008 Santa Monica-Malibu bond measure, the new bike parking lot took six months to complete.

It's ridiculous that a parking lot would be built at same price as a house!!! I would love to have you disclose the bills!

I appreciate that we need bike parking on campus. However I do not see where the $600,000.00 went. Who decided that $1,500. per space was fine, the contractor?

$600,000 to complete 40 bicycle parking spots is an outrageous amount of money! A full accounting is needed, including the names of the responsible parties. This is yet another example of excessive waste of our Property Taxes by the SMC officials and their associates.
