Santa Monica parents in search of something for their children to do this summer -- consider taking a look at "City Camps."

The City of Santa Monica's summer camps are enrolling now, until all spaces are filled.

The summer 2012 camp sessions will begin June 18 and continued to be offered through August 15. There are 28 full and half-day camps for youth 2-14. Financial assistance may be available to qualifying participants.

Julie Rusk, Assistant Director of Community & Cultural Services, said each summer Santa Monica’s summer camps opened up new doors for youth, helping them build the foundation for bright futures.

"These programs are an important component of Santa Monica’s Cradle to Career initiative - a holistic, community-based approach to guiding the successful development of our children,” Rusk said.

Santa Monica City Camps offer creative ways for children to explore a variety of interests, including music, sports, arts, and more. Want to know what it takes to be in a band?

Try the new Rock Santa Monica camp.

Or, find the fun side of learning through Camp Santa Monica Discovery Camp’s hands-on projects in engineering and math, mixed media arts, water adventure clinics – just to name a few.

There’s also Santa Monica Sports Experience where participants go beyond games and tournaments to find the vital link between sports, nutrition, health and sportsmanship

The benefits of summer camps extend far beyond just being fun.

Recent studies show that youth who attend day or resident summer camps for at least one week demonstrate significant positive changes in areas including self-esteem and social skills.

Camps also help youth meet the recommended levels of physical activity (approximately 60 minutes per day).
