The unofficial grand opening for new bike corrals on Main Street was held Saturday, March 24, outside of Peet’s Coffee at 2439 Main Street.

Cynthia Rose, of Santa Monica Spoke, said a bike corral traditionally took up one car parking spot that was converted to park 10 to 14 bikes.

“These bike corrals are different in they utilize red buffer zones that were previously just red zones and not utilized for parking or anything at all,” Rose said. “The City has re-purposed them to provide parking for up to 36 customers to enjoy and engage on Main Street.”

Mayor Richard Bloom was on hand for the ribbon cutting on Saturday.

“Biking is just taking off exponentially,” Bloom said. “More and more people are biking everyday. It’s helping relieve traffic in the city, it’s great exercise, it’s providing people with another means to get around.”

I want to know why Mayor Bloom has not been a voice during the SMC rate increase? Where is he when there is an actual riot between students and police? Cut all the ribbons you need but we need to see how you really work. Thank You L. McCann Santa Monica Ca
