A memorial service will be held for Porter I. Leach, who died peacefully in his home on Nov. 7 and two months short of entering his 100th year, on May 31.

Leach, who was involved in Santa Monica area sports, lived from Jan. 7, 1915, to Nov. 7, 2013.

Margaret Marsh provided the following narrative of Leach:

"This quiet man of principle, dignity, and grace changed the lives of many. Porter was a dedicated high school football and baseball coach, Santa Monica High School Dean of Boys and Vice-Principal. He was a devoted friend and family man. His gentle, unwavering character impressed all who knew him. He was the type of man that, in his honor you would name a child.

Born in Laredo, Missouri, he moved with his family to California during the Great Depression, attended UCLA, and obtained a graduate degree from USC. He married the love of his life, Eleanor Benham, and inspired all as he took care of her for 37 years after her devastating stroke at age 54.

Porter is survived by his three daughters, Jacqueline, Erica, and Margaret; his seven grandchildren and spouses; and, his three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Martha (Roy) Doty and Margie (Glen) Williams, and his brother Howard (Helen), in addition to Porter's nieces and nephews and their children."

Porter's memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 31, at 11 a.m. at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 1031 Bienveneda Avenue, Pacific Palisades, Calif., 90272. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the ALS organization.

In my 40 years as a teacher and science director, Mr. Leach was the Vice Principal that I measured all others against. He cared about his students and we rose to his expectations. Samohi was fortunate to have him. Berk Moss Samohi '62

I had the good fortune to be COACH LEACH'S baseball manager at SAMO. He tried to talk me into getting in to becoming a player. I was simply too lazy an lacked any athletic motivation. Coach Leach was the the most dedicated and sincere guys I have ever met. He was more than a coach, he was your friend and I will always share some great memories of him. Many years have passed (graduated--1952) and he is one of greatest HIGH SCHOOL MEMORIES) ...ENTERED LIFE AT ZERO TO ZERO AND LEFT LIFE A GOING AWAY WINNER. THANKS FOR ALL THE GOOD ADVICE......
