On Sunday, June 10, at 11:45 a.m. officers of the Santa Monica Police Department went to the 1000 block of Broadway after receiving a report about a man who may have been illegally attempting to enter a vacant unit.
When the officers arrived they saw the suspect standing against a fence outside the property.
The officers deduced that the man was heavily intoxicated and was not able to take care of himself so they arrested him, took him to jail, and charged him with public intoxication.
This 60-year-old homeless man had bail set at $10,250, but was put in a cell because he was so drunk.
Later, at midnight on Monday June 11, an officer was checking on all of the inmates and when she looked into this man’s cell she saw that he was not lying on top of the mattress, but was inside of it.
The officers inspected and discovered that this man had torn the mattress open and had climbed inside.
This man thus received a charge of damaging jail property added to the original charge.
