A 60-year-old Malibu was arrested on Saturday, March 15 after inviting a friend to dine at a Denny’s Restaurant in Santa Monica, but then didn’t have any money to pay for their meals.

Officers of the Santa Monica Police Department went to the Denny’s at 1560 Lincoln Boulevard at 9:45 am on this day in order to investigate a case of two individuals who were refusing to pay for their meals.

Upon arrival the officers spoke with an employee who pointed out the two suspects who had ordered food and coffee, and had then proclaimed that neither of them possessed any money with which to pay for their dining experience.

The officers spoke with the suspects and determined that one of the suspects had invited the other out to dine.

The officers accepted that the invitee had in all good faith assumed that the inviter was going to pay for the meal so they allowed him to leave without charge.

The other suspect, however, was deemed to be the one who had possibly committed the crime of defrauding an innkeeper and so they arrested him and charged him with the aforementioned offence.

Bail for this man was set at $20,000.

Editor’s Note: These reports are part of a regular police coverage series entitled “Alert Police Blotter” (APB), which injects some minor editorial into certain police activities in Santa Monica. Not all of The Mirror’s coverage of incidents involving police are portrayed in this manner. More serious crimes and police-related activities are regularly reported without editorial in the pages of the Santa Monica Mirror and its website,

20,000 bail for not having enough money to pay for a breakfast at Denny's? How often does this happen? Is Denny's losing money? Absurd. I will never eat at any Denny's. BTW: Eating at Denny's can hardly be called dining. A small meal for two hungry people? Is there no one left with compassion?

I never eat that cr@p pile dog meat known as Denny's but if I would have been there I would have paid their tab and told the manager the truth: that he's one $180 per week paycheck away from the same fate working at a f-hole place like Denny's. Stay in school kids or you'll be working at Denny's.
