Congresswoman Karen Bass Condemns Anti-Semitic Fliers Left At A Westwood Business

Staff Report

Harsh words are on the record from a local congresswoman who is concerned over anti-Semitic fliers bearing swastikas that were left at a Westwood business.

"I unequivocally condemn whomever is responsible for this despicable action," Rep. Karen Bass, D-Los Angeles, said in a statement issued Friday.

The fliers were found Tuesday, according to the Jewish owner of the store, who told reporters he did not want his name or the location of his business published.

The handwritten fliers referenced "Nazi operatives," rogue cops and even O.J. Simpson, according to the Daily Bruin.

"Los Angeles thrives because of our diversity, and the Jewish community is an integral part of our great city's history and culture,'' according to Bass' statement. "All Angelenos deserve to live, work and play in a city free from intimidation and discrimination."

The discovery of fliers comes as passions remain high over the latest bloody clash between Israel and Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip.

"It is unfortunate that we see these spikes in hateful rhetoric every time there is increased violence in the Middle East," Bass said. "I know that Los Angeles is better than this; this sort of hateful rhetoric has no place in our neighborhoods, and it must stop immediately."

UCLA police spokeswoman Nancy Greenstein and Los Angeles police officer Chris Ragsdale told the Daily Bruin they were unaware of any police investigation into the fliers.

It is too bad that Rep. Bass issues a statement with such a primitive error in English grammar, though her sentiment is admirable. Viz. "I....condemn whomever is responsible for......" It should read, "whoever is responsible."
