Does The Miramar Really Need To Expand?

Posted May. 18, 2013, 9:22 am

Letter To The Editor

Dear Editor,

My name is Kay Ward, and I'm a 34-year Santa Monica resident.

Does the Miramar really need to expand its square footage to over 500,000 square feet to make a profit or achieve its goals as a business?

To put that into context for everyone, that's about the size of the Santa Monica Place, on a much smaller land parcel.

We haven't seen a plan that proposes a lower density that's in keeping with the LUCE and the current version of the Downtown Specific Plan--without the condos, for example.

The EIR should include a study of an alternative site plan with lower density, particularly without the 120 condos.

Thank you.

Being a resident here for 20 years I find that the city of SM does not really care what the residents think especially renters. It's all about tourism and high priced shops and restaurants that most of us can't afford. I do all my shopping outside of SM like most of my friends. The sooner we are forced out the better it is for business is the thinking of city council. They are right now in court to tear down Chez Jay and will win. It's only the beginning!!!!

Thank you, Kay, for that thoughtful question. Santa Monica residents who are concerned about the Miramar monstrosity should do more than ask polite questions. Storm the city council meetings; rally in the streets around the Miramar; let the developers and the elected officials know that this is not wanted It certainly isn't needed.
