Letter To The Editor: Santa Monica's Greedy Parking Meter Attitude Unwelcome

Letter To The Editor

Dear Editor,

Recently when jogging by Santa Monica College I noticed holes being drilled into the center of every metered parking space and a strange object being inserted.

When I got home it dawned on me what I saw. I remembered reading that the city of Santa Monica was going to put sensors beneath each metered parking space so that when a car departed the meter would reset to zero.

I have always been of the opinion that good begets good and one way that this good is payed forward is by leaving a parking meter with time left on it for the next person.

We all delight when we get to a meter that has some time left, we feel we've hit the jackpot when only having to insert 25 more cents rather than 50 cents for the half hour of time needed to shop at the farmer's market or pick up the dry cleaning.

The city has chosen to do away with the idea of good karma and the ability to share small bits of time with one another.

The notion that the city will now take whats left on a meter and put it in its pocket means that people will be paying twice or even three times for the same spot and the same amount of time.

If a car leaves with time left, the sensor will know and reset the meter to zero.

No more lucky breaks, no more paying it forward and being generous to your neighbors.

It's a disgrace. I am not sure how much the city will earn by double dipping but whatever the amount it can't equal the good feelings of generosity when you add money to a meter before you leave because it had time on it when you arrived.

I am sure its too late to change the city's greedy attitude but its worth noting that this change is not welcome by all.

Technically, this has always been the case with parking meters. You're supposed to put money in the meter even if there's already money in it. It's seldom enforced. Also, technically you're not allowed to park in a space indefinitely by repeatedly putting money in the meter. Sad but true.

How Much $$$$ is the city of Santa Monica SPENDING, yes spending, to add all these devices into the street. Can the city not think of anything more productive or life enhancing, than lining their own pockets (yet again). PS- I shop a whole lot less in SM as the tax on goods is higher than a few blocks away. SM seems to be a BH wanna be.

Little joyful events like these are being stripped away more and more. Life is tough enough but I guess politicians prefer grouchy citizens.

I Concurr. It seems the city not only has interupted the good is also unconscionable. Recently, the city has been digging up an alley on 10th St. They gave notice that the project will take two weeks. During this time it has taken away hundreds of parking place's from the alley as well as garages. All the tennants have been forced to find parking on the Street. Prior to the digging, there was no parking available on the Streets. Come now, going on three weeks, the city has spent unneeded money in digging up the alley but also is gaining greedy and decieving revenue from issuing all the parking tickets to high paying tennants who now are getting uneeded $ 64.00 parking tickets. Shame on you Santa Monica. You have now created bad Karma!

Santa Monica used to be a really nice city years ago. Unfortunately, the city is on a rampage to suck as much money as possible out of taxpayers by parking fines and having the police located in strategic spots so they can give out bullshit tickets. I see homeless parked in areas with expired license plates and nothing happens, why? because the city can't suck any money out of them. I'm getting ready to sell my house in SM and get as far from here as possible.

Geez, Jody: You can't have been here very long, Luv. Santa Monica gave up on good Karma around.....let's see......1987. It's no longer a bastion of the "good sort" any longer. Just a greedy little sponge now, like all the others. "God bless their little hearts." :(

Politicians spend every penny and dime and are now after our quarters. Learn to spend within your budget. The rest of us are learning to do with out. Why can you???

SM has been (excuse the term) nazi's with parking enforcement for quite some time. Some years/administrations are worse than others but the revenue generated from penalizing their own citizens and guest must be like crack for the city, they can't get enough. The previous excuses given that they needed to bump the city revenues with parking enforcement because of weak business taxes but since the creation of the 3rd st. Promenade the city has had an amazing influx

Complaining about parking? Wait and see what's going to happen in the next few months. Street parking it's going to cost $2.00 per hour. Public parking it's going to be 2 hrs. free instead of 3 before 5.00 PM. This is going to kill all business in SM. It's OUTRAGEOUS that we have to pay $ 68.00 for a street ticket parking.

Although the City does derive some revenue from its parking meters, ther true purpose of metered parking is to promote the turnover of the limited supply of street spaces. This rationing has been implemente so that all who wish to avail themselves of street parking have a fai opportunity to do so. The cost is not "rent" in the typical sense. By implementing a "use it or lose it" program, the City seeks to encourage greater turnover, and thus greater access to street spaces. If you object to the program, you would be better served to stop whining and to run for a spot on the City Council as some hedge-lovers so famously did a few years back.

Our city's mindset is corrupt. Look at the new single lanes and extended traffic patterns. More money in meters. Temporary taxes for schools yet no savings

I parked at one of these spaces and was shocked to find the clock starts ticking before you even pay the meter. I parked, got out, went to pay the meter, and it said the max I could get was 58 minutes since it counted the time while I was parking as being parked! You can't do anything in 58 minutes! 1 hr meters are crazy, they should be 90 minutes minimum. Not to mention to gross unfair that anyone with a handicapped permit can park all week at a meter for free...
