Post Mortem Movement Theater Company to be Ensemble-in-Residence at the Annenberg Community Beach House for Summer 2016:

Post Mortem Movement Theater Company will start production on a newly devised work set in the Marion Davies Guest House Garden, to debut July 13-15 20-22. The company will also be offering two movement workshops in June as part of the Beach=Culture series. Other Beach=Culture events this summer include readings, talks and concerts.

— Artist Residency —

In June and July 2016, Post Mortem Movement Theater Company will create Ubuntu, a new work, as the seventh annual Theater Ensemble-in-Residence. Artistic Director Angela Lopez and her team will be busy writing, rehearsing, and revising in the Beach House’s public spaces and in the Resident Office at the Marion Davies Guest House. From the start of onsite rehearsals on June 4 through their public performances July 13-15 and 20-22, the public is invited to witness the company’s creation process. The Beach House residency will be an opportunity for Lopez and her company to adapt the troupe’s gothic sensibility to the sunwashed location of Santa Monica Beach. Ubuntu (working title), will be a new work devised from classical myths from around the world and inspired by the famous South African philosophical concept of “humanity towards others.”

Post Mortem Movement Theater Company uses a movement-rich vocabulary with music, puppetry, acrobatic gestures and dance to create eclectic site-specific performances. Its mission is to cross social, cultural and language barriers to tell stories of global interest. Taking its name from staging post-curtain performances on the sets of other productions, Post Mortem is invigorated by the ephemerality of life. By drawing upon ancestral tales and augmenting them with modern flair, they aim to celebrate the rich traditions that underpin contemporary society. Backed by live original music and a troupe of talented performers, Ubuntu celebrates the profoundly beautiful, the ludicrously silly, and everything in between.

Post Mortem was founded by Artistic Director Angela Lopez in 2013 after the Hollywood Fringe festival success of Ravens and Writing Desks, recipient of a “Best of Fringe” award. Post Mortem has gone on to produce Heiner Muller’s Hamletmachine and a collaboration with House of Rabbits on the Fringe favorite Charivari in Voyeurville, among other productions. The Company will share their work with public rehearsals onsite, weekly blog posts at beachhouseair.blogspot.com, and two workshops on June 7 14, culminating in performances of;UbuntuJuly 13-15 20-22.
