Documentary
filmmaker Neil Abramson will speak at a screening of "Soldier
Child," a film which chronicles the savagery faced by tens of
thousands of children in Uganda.
Soldier Child tells the stories of the atrocities and
brutality endured by children forced to serve the Lord's Resistance
Army(LRA). Through stark black and white photos, Abramson documents
the grim reality so often overlooked by the American press, including
a 16 year-old girl who recently gave birth to a child, a result of a
rape by LRA soldiers, and a young boy whose feet are so infected from
marching in the bush he can no longer walk.
Abramson went to Uganda of his own volition, after
having spent time in Africa documenting the events at GUSCO, the
rehabilitation center for children who are able to escape the LRA. In
the documentary, Abramson creates a collage of heartfelt stories from
the children themselves, as well as the social workers who help to
rehabilitate and eventually integrate them back into society.
Abramson is best known for his award-winning
television commercials and music videos. "Soldier Child" is
his first feature film. It will be shown Thursday, August 5, at 7 p.m.
at the Museum of Tolerance.
