Parents Shop, Kids Play At Santa Monica Place

Carolanne Sudderth
Mirror Staff Writer

This summer, Santa Monica Place is offering parents a new answer to the age-old question, “What are we going to do with the kids all summer, dear?” and the inevitable follow up, and "How much is it going to cost?" Santa Monica Place has teamed with the L.A. Children’s Museum, the Natural History Museum and others to offer what it describes as “a summer of learning and fun.” The twist is, Santa Monica Place pays the kids for attending.
Each child is given a special “photo ID” passport which is stamped every time he attends a show or crafts event. When the program ends on Sept. 3, he or she is awarded a prize based on the number of programs that he has attended, ranging from a coloring puzzle with a box of crayons to a sweatshirt for those who have attended nine or more events.
The focus is on children 7 years of age and under, although all are welcome. At the first weekday show, the Happy Crowd, a musical trio sang lively child-oriented tunes that had kids and parents alike bouncing in the aisles.
The programs cover a broad range of subject matter. The message of “Shake with the Quake” (July 30) is self-evident. On July 16, Curious George and the Man in the Yellow Hat are scheduled to take kids on an “engaging outing.” As children know, Curious George is always getting into mischief. And Paddington Bear and Mr. Brown will take children on an adventure on July 9.During the month of August the Los Angeles Children’s Museum will present musical versions of favorite children’s books.
Shows are offered every Friday in the 3rd Level Community Room at 11 a.m. and repeated at 1 p.m. On Saturdays, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., children can take part in an arts and crafts program in Santa Monica Place’s Center Court.
The program continues through September 3. All events are free.
