Craftsman Cottages In Jeopardy
The white clapboard cottages with the individually-colored front doors at 211 Alta Avenue may soon fall victim to the wrecker’s ball unless neighborhood groups are successful in obtaining landmark status for the complex. A fine example of craftsman architecture which flourished in southern California in the 1920s and 1930s, the complex features moderne-mullioned windows and a vine-covered trellis around every door. The dozen-or-so cottages surround a broad swath of lawn and flower beds and appear to be in pristine condition. Because the complex is more than 50 years old, a developer would be required to obtain an okay from the Landmarks Commission before demolition could proceed. -- Carolanne Sudderth
