Joslyn Park Gets Facelift

Carolanne Sudderth
Mirror Staff Writer

Santa Monica City Council gave kids something to look forward to last Tuesday when they awarded the contract for the renovation of Joslyn Park and for the construction of the new playground to be installed therein.

Other parts of the park are to receive attention as well. The basketball court will be enlarged, the wrought iron peripheral fence replaced and maintenance performed on concrete retaining walls throughout the park. Construction of a new American Disabilities Act-compliant driveway will provide easier access to the restrooms.

The park’s gates and handrails will also be modified to bring them into compliance with the ADA. According to the City staff report, the new playground “will combine manufactured and custom play elements, a large play structure, and outdoor playrooms that incorporate sand and water features.”

Rios Associates who designed the play area, also created plans for the complete renovation of Douglas Park and for play areas in Clover, Marine and Ozone parks Thomsen Landscape will begin the hands-on physical work in August. They won the job with a low bid of $461,120 (plus a 15% contingency of $69,168). Construction should be complete within three months of start-up.
