Cries of “Si, se puede” (yes, we can) echoed down Main Street Tuesday afternoon as people gathered on the lawn in front of City Hall carrying placards in support of the “Living Wage” proposal.
Members of the Church in Ocean Park Choir performed the type of militant folk songs that marked the ‘60s and called for “justice not charity.” Bill Bronner, a member of Santa Monicans Allied for Responsible Tourism, the proposal’s principal sponsor, introduced the workers who stepped up to the microphone to speak. A large percentage spoke through a translator.
Members of the Chamber of Commerce which has publicly stated its opposition to the proposal and a crowd of TV and print reporters were also present. Estimates put the throng on the lawn in front of City Hall at about 250.
