Street Performers Continue Their Battle With The City
Mirror Staff
Protesting new City regulations which require them to move their locations at least 120 feet every two hours which Jerry Rubin, Alliance for Survival, has called a musical chairs nightmare, street performers now organized as S.H.A.P.E. (supporters and helpers of artists, politicos and entertainers) conducted a one-hour sit-in at the Bayside District Corporation offices on August 9 and delivered a 1,000-foot long Freedom Scroll, containing messages opposing the new regulations, to the City Council office in City Hall on August 17.
They are currently circulating a petition calling for less restrictions, more mediative solutions...(and) an immediate modification of the ordinance. In addition, theyre asking people to call the City Council to demand reconsideration of the Street Performer Ordinance and to call the Bayside District Corporation, which manages the Third Street Promenade to demand mediation.
Monday, at its regular weekly meeting, S.H.A.P.E. discussed ideas for a Performer and Artist Code of Contact.
Rubin has also announced that A Mediation and Conflict Resolution Lecture and Workshop led by mediators from dispute resolution services has been scheduled for Monday, September 13, at the Ken Edwards Center from 7 to 9 p.m.
