Open Letter from Principal of Samohi to Community of Santa Monica
To the Community of Santa Monica,

As you may have already heard, last Friday night after Samohi's varsity football game against Venice High School, an altercation took place outside Santa Monica College's main stadium.  Officers from the Santa Monica Police Department acted swiftly to bring the situation under control and took the necessary steps to make sure that a young male who had been stabbed during the incident was quickly rushed to the hospital.  He is is expected to make a full recovery.  It is our understanding that none of the people involved in the altercation are Samohi students.  While this matter is still under investigation, it is believed that gangs may be involved.

Because this incident happened at a school event, Chief of Police Tim Jackman, Superintendent of Schools Tim Cuneo, and Samohi Principal Hugo Pedroza have been working through the weekend to make sure this issue does not negatively impact the Samohi community.  Chief Jackman has already committed strong police presence around Samohi's campus during the coming days to support the integrity of the school environment.  SMPD is keeping us informed and working diligently to resolve this issue.

Thank you for your support and understanding.  Rest assured that our primary concern is the safety of our students.

Dr Hugo Pedroza

Principal

Santa Monica High School
